SPANISH CLUB.

m . The reading circle and study group of the Spanish Club held last week an enjoyable and instructive evening, time being devoted to translation, practice conversation, and idiomatic construction. South American' newspapers and periodicals recently received by the president (Mr.. W. T. Goodwin) afforded interesting scope for translation, and passages from Albrech Maass's "Viaje.a Mag-1 allanes" gave an excellent description of the world's southernmost city. A manuscript in possession of Mr. Saunders, written in 1750 at the Musel del Prado, Madrid, entitled "Reflexiones sobre un retrato de Velazquez," held much interest for its age and the appreciation of a great painter's art. Communications from corresponding members were also translated, and messages framed to Senor Ortego, of Mexico City, with whom Mr. Carr, of Wellington, is in radio communication. During the evening the assistance of Mr. Hunwick, both to the circle and the study group, was greatly appreciated. Mr. Hunwick, having resided for a large number of years in the States of South America, spoke in fluent Spanish, explaining variations in pronunciation and commercial expressions employed in different parts of the continent.

E. Johnston and Co., auctioneers, will sell damaged carpets and body carpet at their basement mart, No. 8 Willeston I Street at 10.30 a.m. tomorrow. j
