Early this afternoon & report w»S received in 'Wellington that a small vessel, believed to be in distress, had been sighted two or three miles off the Paekakariki beach attempting to beat up into the lee of Kapiti Island. _ A! heavy north-west wind was blowing ana .there was a strong • sea, against which,' the vessel was ; not making any; headway. The weather conditions were such that she was likely to be blown; towards the mainland;'
It is thought that t the vessel Is thai, auxiliary schooner Huanui (144 tons)^ bound with a cargo of coal from Grey* mouth. to Foxtonl Her 'pw,ner is' T. C* Thomson, of Auckland, and the local agents are Holm and Company.
