(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

AUCKLAND, This Day. Constable Stewart's condition was reported at noon to be satisfactory. He has a compound fracture of the right leg.

At the time of the chase he was in. mufti. When he boarded the taxi the latter soon overhauled the car and headed it to the kerb, where it stopped, but when the constable jumped on the running board it quickly backed out and sped, off. The taxi followed, doing 45 miles an hour, but could not keep pace. To those in the taxi it looked as if a fight was going on. The car wag swerving all over the road.

When picked up the constable had been rolled thirty yards along the road. He was covered with blood. His leg appeared to be mangled. He was gasping with pain, but was given a cigarette, and 'when another constable arrived he immediately called on him to take a statement. This was done by the light of a torch, the injured man retaining re-markable-control of himself.

The stolen car was found this morn* ing only a quarter of a mile from the scene of the crash. The driver has not been traced.
