LOS ANGELES TOURNEY

THIRD ROUND OF SINGLES

LOS ANGELES, September 19.

The Pacific south-west lawn tennis tourney was continued. Following are the results of play in the second round:—

Quist (Australia) defeated Dole Issenhuth (Los Angeles), 1-6, 6-1, 6-4; Wilde (Britain) defeated WiUiain Seward (Beverly Hills), 2-6, 6-1, 6-4;. Perry (Britain) defeated Cliff Johnson (California), 6-0, 7-5. In the third round Perry defeated Elbert Lewis (Los Angeles), 6-2, 6-2; Stoefen (U.S.A.) defeated Lee (Britain), 8-10, 8-6, 6-0; Turnbull (Australia) defeated Charles Otis (Pasadena), 6-3, 4-6, 6-3; Jack Tidball (California) defeated Quist (Australia), 6-4, 6-2; J. Van Ryn (U.S.A.) defeated Wilde (Britain), 6-4, 6-1. In the third round of the women's singles Miss D. Bound (Britain) defeated Mrs. Ethel Arnold (Los Angeles), 7-5, 6-2. Tidball eliminated Quist in straight sets. The Australian was unable to handle Tidball's fast service and shots to the baseline. Quist was off to a bad start, losing his service in the first game to love. He then broke Tidball's service, and each player took his own service until the ninth game* when Tidball broke through Quist's service to 15. and then won his own and the set.

The second set lasted only eight games, Tidball breaking Quist's service twice and losing his own service but once.

Turnbull had a difficult time defeating Otis in three sets after playing on fairly even terms in the first two sets. The Australian continued his steady play while his opponent faltered in the third set. Turnbull took a 5-3 lead, then clinched the match with a love game on his own service. Quist and Turnbull' drew a byo in the men's doubles which started today.
