ROAD TO MILFORD
HASTENING CONSTRUCTION

The number of; men engaged on■ the construction of the road to Milford through the Eglinton Valley is to be doubled almost immediately, with a view to bringing the road up to the site of the proposed motor' tunnel through Gertrude Saddle; In the meantime, a survey of the tunnel is to be mads so that the Public Works Department will be able to submit ah esti'mar'e of the cost to: Cabinet. C . i This information was.: given by the Postmaster-General (the Hon. ■*■&. Hamilton) in,the: course of art 'interview today. Mr. Hamilton is interested, in the road both as- a; means of absorbing unemployed men and as an.attraction to tourists. He said that .arrangements would be made ta;.increase. the 52 or 53 men at, present on the'work to about 100. . During the summer a survey would be made of the proposed tunnel and estimates of t the cost of construction ■ would be made. ~■ Tho cutting of; the tunnel .would be dependent on the question -of eosty and there was n.o suggestion that it would be made. If the construction of.the tunnel proved feasible it would be advisable to have tho road constructed to the pass, and the extra men would help to push, that work forward. i
