PAKAPOO PLAYING
PREMISES EAIDED
THIRTY ARRESTS MADE
HEAVY FINES IMPOSED
Five houses in Taranaki Street, where it was suspected that. pakapoo was being played, were raided by a party of police yesterday afternoon, and as a result thirty men, nine Chinese and the remainder Europeans, were arrested. In the Magistrate's Court today, before Mr. E. Page, S.M., Wing Lee, Wong Hing, Ah Sam, Ah AVong, and Len Cheng were charged with using premises situated at 136, 120, 103, 130, and 134 Taranaki Street respectively as common gaming houses. . The accused, who were represented by Mr. G. Josephs, pleaded guilty. Ah Sam and Ah Wong, who had previously been convicted, were each fined £30, and Wing Lee, Wong Hing, and Lcn Cheng were each fined £25. Sub-Inspector Martin said that a constable had no difficulty in purchasing tickets on the premises, which had been used for the purpose of playing pakapoo for some time. It was difficult to put a stop to the practice. On charges of being found in a common gaming house without lawful excuse, the following, who pleaded guilty, were each fined £3: —Gordon Leslie Scott, Herbert Thomas Palmer, Thomas Thompson, George William Hudson, Jeremiah James Fo!ey, Stuart Gordon McColl, Patrick Kelly, Arthur Eichard Edwards, Frederick Backhouse, Frederick John Gooch, Spiro Alexander, John Tonga, Oswald Gerald Thompson, Gilbert Gillespie Watson, John James Weeds, Ronald Jorey, Eric Bernard Casey, Joseph. Began, Henry Kearney, George Wong, and Ah Wing.' Lee On and Law Hce, who pleaded not guilty, were also, fined £3,' and John Jones, who entered a similar plea, was fined £1. A charge against Michael Coyne of being found on the premises was dismissed. «
