SAMOA AND NIUE
DEPARTMENTAL INSPECTION
The Public Service Commisioner, Mr. P. Vcrschaffclt, and the Secretary of External Affairs, Mr. C. A. Bercndscn, returned to Wellington today on tlie Maui Poraare from Western Samoa and Niuo Island, where they have been making a departmental inspection of the Public Service. The ship arrived at iyttclton yesterday. The Public Service in Western Samoa comprises members of the Saiiioan Administration and the New/ Zealand Reparation Estates. There lire several members of tho service at Niuo Island. All come under tho jurisdiction of tho Public Service Commissioner in tlfb same way ns public servants employed in tho Dominion. During Mr.' Verschaffolt's absence Mr. A. D. Thomson acted as Public Service Commissioner, and Mr. A. B. Ross, of the External Affairs Department, relieved Mr. Berendsen. On his return today, Mr. Verschaffelt said that he had «p public statement to make, but intimated that lie would be submitting a report to the Government.
