BANANAS AND KUMERAS
MAUI POMARE ARRIVES
Tho Islands motor-ship Maui Pomare arrived in Wellington this afternoon from Apia and Niue, via Lyttelton. She brought a cargo of bananas and kumeras from the Islands, also nine passengers for Wellington. She brought ten persons from the Islands, one of them, Captain W. Bell, Resident Commissioner at Niue Island, disembarking at Lyttelton. The passengers for Wellington were the 'Public Service Commissioner, Mr. P. D. Verschaffolt, and Mrs. Verschaffelt, the Secretary of External Affairs, Mr. C. H. Berandsen, and Mrs. Berendsen, Major E. C. Styles, Mr. and Mrs. Elton and child, and Miss V. N. Rawlins, of the Apia, Hospital. The Maui Pomare was two hours late in arriving at Lyttelton on Monday night owing to having encountered adverse weather. She experienced a good, passage from Wellington to Apia, but on the return trip she ran into heavy seas and strong southerly winds, which at times blow with full gale force. She left Nino Island on July 29, and it was not until the vessel sighted the Kaikouras that conditions moderated. The Maui Pomare brought 6571 cases of bananas from Apia and 1434 from Niue. In addition she had on board several tons of kumeras and general ■cargo and mails. The larger portion of the cargo was discharged at Lyttelton yesterday. The Maui Pomare is to sail next Tuesday for Apia and Niue.
