PRELUDE TO HURDLES

ADVENTUS WINS ALL WAY

Adventus, after failing over a furlong less in a simijar race at Trentham last month, was not keenly fancied by betters in the Jumpers' Flat Eace, being relegated to fifth favouritism both ways, but on this occasion he went a different race hard ridden all the'way out in front, and he lasted through a solid gallop to hold oft' the favourite, Punchestown, by a length. Adventus drew the outside mai'ble, but his trainer-rider (31. H. Nicol) drove him to the lead at ouoe, and was in front on the rail leaving the straight. Entering the bade stretch he was four lengths clear of Paieta and Advance Camp, with Prince of Orange, Gold Knight, Punchestown, and Nightcap in a bunch behind, and Membo bringing up the rear. At the six furlongs the field closed up, and on the home turn Nightcap moved up to second place with a run along the outer. Once in the straight Punchestown came down on the.

leader with a determined challenge, but Adventus gamely responded to vigorous riding to hold on to his advantage to the finish. It was a good performance by the winner, but ridden similarly he may fail before the end of tho Grand National Hurdles. Punchestowu should not lose any of his National friends in his defeat, as Adventus has previously shown himself notoriously hard to catch when out in front. Prince of Orange wont quite a satisfactory race on the rail all the way, and ho finished better than Nightcap over the last furlong to gather in the third place dividend, two lengths behind Punehestown. Nightcap, who was undoubtedly asked to go along rather too soon, was a fair fourth, and Membo was finishing on well in fifth place. After an interval came tho tired Paleta, with Advance Camp and Gold Knight bringing up the rear. : As a prelude to Thursday's Hurdles the race showed up as probably best the prospects of the three placed horses and Membo, especially the latter,- who was doing his job really well at the finish.
