SPORTS ATTRACTIONS

PRELIMINARY PLANS

In view of the numerous attractions which it was thought could be arranged for the National Confidence Carnival, to be held in Wellington during Novem- j ber, a meeting of representatives of local sports organisations convened in connection with the carnival decided last evening to recommend to the executive committee that two Saturdays should be included in the programme. If this is adopted, the carnival will commence on November 18 and conclude on November 25. The Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. Hislop),' who was present at the commencement of the meeting, spoke briefly of the objects of the carnivHl, and said he was confident that the sports bodies would bj able to play a big part in the" success of tho fixture. Mr. G. G. Stewart, chairman of the executive committee, who presided, said that tho carnival was already arousing widespread interest throughout the Dominion. The organiser (Mr. H. Amos) suggested that two of the main attractions should be tho inter-collegiate athletic championships, which were always held in November, and displays and athletic events by the newly-formed Business Girls' Athletic Association. He also suggested a marathon race, and a teams' cycle race with New Plymouth ,and Napier as tho starting points. It was agreed that there should bo a variety of attractions to eater for all tastes. Speaking on behalf of the Wellington Aero Club, the secretary (Mr. A. W. Nisbet) said that while ho could not commit the club to anything, he was confident that it would co-operate as far as possible. November was not an ideal time for flying, but there might be directions in which the club could help. It was stated that an endeavour was being made to hold a marathon race during the harrier season, and it might I -• possible to postpone the event until Xovernber.. Bowling and golf tournaments and open-air boxing were suggested as being likely to attract public interest. With regard to the cycle racing it was decided to approach the Cycling Centre with a view to . having the annual race froni Palmerston North to Wellington postponed from October until the following month. Mr. O. A. Moller, referring to the proposed aquatic display, said it wassiiggestod that there should be yacht racing, a surf club display, and swimming events, a "bathing beauty" parade, fireworks, rowing, and illuminated boats, all at Oriental Bay. The racing and trotting authorities are to be approached with tho object of having special meetings arranged during the carnival period. The Wellington Lawn Tennis Association will also be asked if 'it can arrange a tournament. ' . Mr. J. Abel said that the Winter Show Association executive had decided to offer the use of its buildings during the; carnival in the event of wet weather, providing they were not being used for • examinations. It was decided to make an endeavour to secure the usp of the Basin Reserve oil at least oiieiof the' Saturdays. ?'''
