Shovels, .steel rod*,, .and: provisions had been cached yesterday, and the first party reached them at a spot 4000 feet up at 8 a.m. It was hard going, every step plunging the. searchers to the knees, but the excavators were quickly nt work..and made good 'progress in clearing the scene of lust Sunday's snow-slide/ Probing with rods was going on at the same' time as the excavations, but the, excavation method was more sure. It is certain that the body has been frozen,, and the only hope with the rods •was that they •might ca'teh in the clothing arid tints locate the exact spot where Russell is buried. Experienced alpinists are superintending the operations.
