SPEED OF CARGO SHIPS
There is, according to "Tho Motor Ship," a. tendency to increase the speed of cargo ships, but this ia much, more marked abroad- than it is in: tho United Kingdom. Thirty vessels, designed for a speed of 13 knots, or over, have: been ordered this year, and of them 23 are to sail under a foreign flag. ;Only 11 .slow. cargo ships (with a speed of -11 knots) have been ordered, and all of these are for British owners. It is a significant fact that the slow vessels are equipped with steam, machinery, and all tho faster ships, are to be motor propelled. Somo of the new vessels aro designed lor a much higher speedy and an instance is the "Tricolor," completed last month ■ for tho Australia]) service, which, on trials, attained about 16J knots, and will be,capablc of maintaining 16,.knots, in service, fully laden.
