SAVAGE CLUB WELCOME

LADIES ENTERTAINED

VICEREGAL ATTENDANCE

Always an occasion for an unusual display of original entertainment and merrymaking, the annual ladies' "korero," given by tlje Wellington Savage Club is anticipated with much pleasure by wives, daughters, and privileged friends of members. For this year's function which was held in the Town Hall last evening there was a very, large and responsive audience, which enjoyed to the full a.programme abundant with talent and - sprinkled with burlesque. Their Excellencies the GovernorGeneral and Lady Bledisloe attended, accompanied by Lieutenant Rodney Thomson, R.N., and Miss Diana Harris, and were met on arrival" by a band of representative Savages. Her Excellency wore a graceful frock of begonia pink chiffon under a handsome white fur coat. Miss Harris wore a frock of golden yellow angel-skin lace. ■■ ' ' Under the expert guidance of Savages W. J. McKean, A. S. Paterson, and 6. F. Wilson, the hall had. been decorated to resemble the outskirts of a Maori pa, the walls being screened with freizes depicting palisade fences, and the galleries surrounded with a Maori conventional design and cut-outs of tikis and native figures. His Excellency, after having been reinstalled for the fourth year as Ariki Nui, by Dr. D. N. Isaacs (Chief Savage), congratulated the members on the remarkable vitality of the Savage Club, and remarked on the fact that of the membership of 550, fifty new members had been enrolled during the last year. '' Most associations have lost members during the economic crisis," said his Excellency. The indication "was that the sort of entertainment and comradeship given by the club were the very best antidote which could be sought to meet the current depression. It was generally found that those ,who were most successful in meeting and overcoming difficulties were those who sought healthy diversion from anxiety. "Quite obviously you are pseudo-Poly-nesians on these occasions," said his Excellency, "so it might interest you to hear a few details in relation to our recent Pacific tour.", His Excellency then gave entertaining descriptions of the Cook Islands, native' games, and ceremonies. : Del'»;ious refreshments were served at buffet tables in the Concert Chamber and in the ina ( in hall where dancing was also enjoyed at the conclusion of the concert. . r The programme was opened by two selections played by the Savage Club Orchestra, under the conduetorship of Mr. Frank Thomas. This was followed by a succession of greeting cries, hakas, and war dances by realistically bedecked warriors and Rangitiras which roused no little amusement., This was followed by a programme of song, drama, burlesque, ballet, and sketches. ; Those who took part in the Maori items were- Savages J.
