A FORGOTTEN NOVELIST
"The Mary Ward:- Settlement -. in Bloomsbury (London), for which an appeal is being, made, has under different names and varying personal influences done very useful work since the beginning of this century," says a .contributor. Jo.. "Evqrynian.'V ."I wonder how many people could identify the Mary Ward after whom it is named? She was Mrs. Humphry Ward, the once- famous novelist of late Victorian and Edwardian times, nieoo of Matthew Arnold, granddaughter of Dn Arnold, of Kugby, sister of the 'Willy' Arnold -who helped so much in the rise of. the-.'Manchester Guardian,' and wife of a -wel.l-know.il art-critic of 'The Times.' Booksellers, I. believe, report no demand now for Mrs. Ward's novels, which in.their day wore bestsellers. A future age will probably rediscover them, much as our own has rediscovered Trollope." Mrs., Humphry Ward was born in Hobart in. 1851. She died in. 1920.
