LEAKAGE OF OIL
The following is from the Cape "Times," South Africa: — "In the earlier days of motoring complaint was made of the manner in whicn oil from motor-cars was permitted to drip on to road surfaces, to their defilement. • Where it occurred thia was due to faults of design and lack o± proper provision against a waste that was as little to the advantage of the r, torist as of any other interest involved. Attention once directed to "it lc#l to precautionary measures, and it is. not too much to say that there is no excuse today for oil leakage from any motor-vehicle. Nevertheless we have to admit that not only is ihere oil leakage, but it has almost reached a poi-t that requires action. "Investigation, we believe, would disclose that while there may be a number of leaking motor-cars tho main volume of complaint arises from leakages on commercial vehicles. Recently we have observed a number of *he more decrepit vans and lorries leaving a con-
tinuous trail of oil spots that made it evident,a, cure for the ailment would effect an economy more than justified by its cost. Left, unchecked.; such a condition of affairs is not merely disagreeablo for other traffic, but must add to the dangers of our water-proofed roads, as tp which there has been so much complaint of late. Already city streets havo become so slimy that considerable care has to be taken when using brakes or making turns; and immediately after a spell or! dry weather hais ended cars are difficult to handle. 'Regulations exist to control oil and grease leakage of this kind, and the sooner they are operated the better."
