THE BIG RIVER REPORT

Big Kiver Gold Mines, Ltd., reports for month of July that in No. 1 adit level winze on Duggan's Reef the lode averaged 2ft in width of clean quartz, and carries a good, clean foot wall. No gold seen, but stone is heavily mineralised, and sampjes have been forwarded for assay. In No. 2 adit' level, winze below south drive at 190 ft east of shaft, a good connection was made with rise, and ventilation is now satisfactory. In No. 3 level, rise above No 1 south drive at 80ft from entrance, advanced lift, total 81ft; lode track unsettled and carrying a little rubbly quartz. South intermediate drive—Nothing of importance met with. Driving suspended, in this drive, off winze at 20ft down, opened out and driven 13ft. Stone varied from 18in to 2ft wide in the upper part of drive, but was pinched in bottom. Fair gold was seen in breaking. Faulting occurred at 13ft, and driving was supended. In the west prospecting drive oft' northwest branch drive at point 50ft from shaft, driven 2ft on small quartz vein carrying a few colours of gold. Stoping continued on Jones reef above intermediate level on stone averaging sft wide and showing a little fine gold, and on 25th inst. stoping was resumed off No. 1 south rise on Henderson's reef on stone varying from 18in to 3in in width and carrying fair gold. New ladders are being put in below No. 3 level, main shaft, and preparations made for repairing winding shaft and commencing operations at No. 4 level. Hepairs to dam vere completed, and rain fell enabling crushing to be resumed with two shifts. Stone crushed practically all from Jones reef. Battery clean-up takes place about August 5, OPITONUI ASSAYS. Opitonui Developments, Ltd., -report for the week ending July 20 that two further cuts were put into the north wall of R.T.S. reef and these failed to disclose the same type of ore as that showing in No. 1 cut. The dip of the reef is quite different. The north, portion of No. 1 cut dips approximately 15deg south, and the south portion dips approximately sdeg ■ north. The north portion has ihe appearance of belonging to another ore body. A little more work will prove this point. Turner's leader—Trenching along jfs course towards R.T.S. has been commenced. It is important to find the exact location of the intersection of this leader with R.T.S. as this may be the source of the gold in R.T.S. reef. Power of Paddy's tunnel will be completed ready for sampling during the coming week. Hilda west level was check sampled and showed the following assay results: —Left side, Sdwt gold, 2%dwt silver, value 20s 2d; middle, 26.5dwt gold, 9dwt silver, value 106s 9d; right side, 17dwt gold, 7dwt silver, value 68s' 7d. Large dump of quartz at portal of Hilda West level: 7.sdwt gold, 4.sdwt silver, value "30s 4d. Carvel section —Dump of fine quartz at portal of broken down No. 1 surface level assayed 9dwt gold, 7.sdwt silver, value 36e 7d. Dump of coarse quartz from same level, 6dwt gold, 9.sdwt silver, value 24s 9d. According to the plan there , is an unworked surface block here^. Tailings pit adjacent to old battery site: Pilot sampled. First 2ffc sand assayed s.sdwt gold, 14.5dwt silver, value 23s 2d. Second 2ft, under sand being slime, assayed 2,sdwt gold, 5.5 dwt silver, value 10s sd. Tailings pits east of roadway; First dam assayed I.sdwt gold, 3dwt silver, value 6s 3d; second dam, which is further away from mill,1 assayed Idwt gold, 2.sdwt silver, value 4s 2d. The work of sampling these pits and estimating the value and tonnage will he proceeded with forthwith. During-, the week several prospectors' samples were dealt with and one taken from an outcrop in quartz creek assayed 7dwf gold and sdwt silver,' value 28s 5d.. Gold is calculated at £4 per ounce.
