Luke, jnr., manager of Briscoe and Company, Ltd., Wellington, and latterly associated on the executive of Briseoe, E. W. Mills and Co., Ltd., has received notice of re-t transfer to Briscoe and Company, Ltd., Auckland. Advice has just been received in Timaru that Professor Cecil Malthus; an old boy of Timaru Boys' High School, and a graduate of Canterbury College, has l^een granted a Doctorate of Literature for a thesis, written in French, on the influence of Shakespeace on the FrWch dramatist and poet, Alfred de Mussct. Dr. Malthus is Professor of Modem Languages at Hobart University. ' Mr. J. P. Gifford, who, aiter a service of 21 years as asistant sub-editor of the "Press," is leaving to become subeditor of tha '■'Timaru Herald," was met by a large assembly, af the staff yesterday and presented with a wallet of notes, states a Christchurch Press Association message. The editor (Mr. P. H. N. Freeth) made the presentation, and the general manager-(Mr. A. M. Burns), who formerly as chief subeditor was associated with Mr. Gifford for 13 years, expressed regret at the departure of a loyal helper and good comrade.
