RACING IN ENGLAND

GOODWOOD CUP RESULT

United Presi Association—By' Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received July 28, 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, July 27. On the third day o/ the' Goodwood^ Summer Meeting the following was the result of the

GOODWOOD CUP, a sweepstakes with 1000 soys added (including cup); second 200 soys, third 100 soys; special weights, with penalties and allowances; about 2 miles and 5 furlongs. E. Esmond's b c Sans Peine, by Sansovino—Oswyn, by Neil ' Gow, 3yrs, 7.11 1 Sir Harold WernheA br g Brown Jack, by Jackdaw—Querquidella, 9yr5,9.11 .............. 2 Sir Frederick Eley's gr h Ximenes, by Teddy—Xanthene, 4yrs, 8.4 3 Five started. vWon by four lengths, a length and a half between second and third. ■ ' ■

The stayers' "classic," tho Goodwood Cup, has been somewhat of an unlucky race for Brown Jack, for, althougli he won* it in 1930, in the four other of the last five years he has finished second. In 1929 Old Orkney beat him home, then in 1931, 1932, and this year Salmon- Leap, Brulette, and Sans Peine respectively have been just too good for him.

Sans Peine, this year's victor, is a colt who' nas not done much racing yet, but he is oho about whom his trainer, J.'Jarvisj of Newmarket, has evidently always held a high opiiiion. He was twice unplaced as a two-year-old last year, and this year ho contested the Derby Trial Stakes (1* miles) at Lingfield, finishing twelfth in the .field of thirteen, prior to turning out at the Ascot Meeting last month and winning the King Edward VII Stakes (li miles) on the second day.

Following that success an English critic.wrote: —"Jack Jarvis has always held the opinion that Sans Peine would make Mr. Esmond a useful horse, and the son of Sansovino is going to vindicate the Park Lodge trainer's judgment. There was little excuse for fancying Mm yesterday (June 14), for in th© Derby Trial at Lingiield Thrapstou gave him a stone and a good boating. Yesterday ho had 71b the worst of the. weights with Lord Derby's colt, but Sans Peine is evidently training on rapidly.''' He was bred at the Swynford Paddocks Stud. —"Rangatira."
