A STRANGE CRIME
DOCTORS KIDNAPPED
CUNNING PLOT FAILS
NEW YORK, July 14.
America's strangest kidnapping, involving torture and an elaborate plot to attribute the murder of one doctor to another, and to make the latter's death appear to bo suicide, has occurred at St. Paul, Minnesota. ' ■. The plot, which the police believe to have been organised by a disgruntled patient, failed, as both doctors are alive, and recovering from their wounds. Drs. Engcberg and Hedberg, each unknown to the other, were the victims. They were kidnapped by the same gang, and Dr. Engobcrg was ordered, under threat of death, to mutilate Dr. Hedberg. . , Dr. Engebcrg refused, and was chloroformed, and given a hypodermic injection. Ho wijs then strapped to Dr. Hedberg's car, which was driven to a railway, where it was left across the lines. , The car was struck by a train, as intended, but although Dr. Engeberg was badly injured, he escaped with his life and was Tushed to hospital. In the motor-car with Dr. Engcberg was Dr. Hedberg's purse, aud also a pistol, from which two bullets had been fired.- Dr. Hedberg was found by a woman a little later, lying groaning in a ditch. There was a bullet-wound in his right ear. "Go ahead. Finish mo, since you've gone this far," he muttered to the woman, thinking he was still in the hands of the bandits. Neither of the doctors, both of whom are recovering, is.able to suggest any motive for the crime, although each recently had been bothered by anonymous telephone calls.
