SAILORS' SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING

The annual meeting pf the British Sailors'. Society was held in the Ciiba Street, rooms last nightA The president, Mr. C. D. Morpeth, presided.

The report- and. balance-sheet, (already published) were adopted. ' ' Tho chairman reviewed the year's activities, and spoke "of the effort to co-oper-ate with other similar societies in assisting men who were not seamen in the present difficult times. Speaking appreciatively of the manner in which the T. G. Macarthy Trust had continued its annual support, he said it was evident that the trustees considered the work of the society worthy of assistance. He hoped that before long .the London office of the society would take cognisance of the representations made by its AVellington branch and erect a'building for it in.Wellington. At present the difficulty in obtaining suitable quarters without a correspondingly high rental (nearly £4 a week) was largely . responsible for their excess of expenditure over income. Pastor W. G. Carpenter, of the Church of Christ, moved the following resolution-, which was seconded by. Captain A. V. Hale-Moni-Q, and carried: —"That this meeting—(a) Expresses its .gratitude to Almighty God for the' services rendpred to the -Empire by our sailors^' and (b)' approves; the manifold activities of the British. Sailors'.Society in contributing to the spiritual, intellectual, nml social wellbeing of sailors, and therefore commendsto all who can contribute the appeal foxfunds to carry on and extend t]ic society s work." N ,

A collection having been taken up and Benediction having been given by Mr. 'Carpenter, tho meeting closed with 7 the singing of the National Anthem and the provision of refreshments. ' ■ During, the evening Miss Newman, Mr. and Mrs. Child, and Miss D. Seymour provided items of entertainment. Miss Myer was accompanist.
