ST. JOHN AMBULANCE

GOOD YEAE'S, WORK

FIRST-AID AWARDS

The animal meeting of St. John Ambulance Association (Wellington Centre) was held last night. The Mayor (Mr.. T. C. A. Hislop) presided. There was a large attendance of nurses, also a number of members of the medical profession. Medallions were presented to successful nurses and first-aid certificates to twelve members, of the Police Force.

In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, the Mayor said it must be a matter of great gratification to the members of the organisation to know that as a result of the foresight and care exercised in the early days of the society, it was now possible for members for the first time to hold their itmiual meeting in their*own hall. The balancesheet showed that the society had got through the past difficult year successfully. It was necessary to press forward and increase tile activities of the brigade, nnd that could only be done by widening the area of support. The work of the organisation was well known, but unfortunately it was'apt to be taken for granted. He urged, members to do their utmost to increase the membership of the society. He was sure that those who took part in the affairs of the various athletic organisations which were' helped by St. John Ambulance would readily respond to a request for the modest annual subscription. Dr. J. S. Elliott, in seconding the motion, said the outstanding feature of the year had been the purchase of the fine hall and accommodation for the association. It was bis ambition when he first became connected .with the organisation that it should be suitably housed. That was in accordance with the desire of the parent body. The increased number of classes held during the year was very creditable. During the .year an attempt had been made to stiffen up the examinations. It was a very serious thing indeed for any person to undertake to give firstaid and called for training. The examiners had been requested to be particular that they passed no candidate unless in the opinion of the examiners they were able to render efficient first-aid. Those trained should know the reason behind what they were doing. If students were taught the reasons why they were doing such and such a thing, they acted with intelligence, and never forgot -what they were doing. He spoke of the good work done at the Nelson-Marlborough, Carterton, and Masterton sub-centres. Dr. Elliott complimented Mr. C. Meachen, secretary, for the excellent work he had done. It was possible 'that before long subcentres would be established at Napier and Hastings. The report- and balance-sheet were tlie motion of Mr. F. W. Ward, seconded by Dr. A.
