"INTERNATIONAL" DAY

HUTT LEAGUE OF MOTHERS

Sheaves of bamboo, Chinese lanterns, Chinese brass1 and lacquer ware, Oriental embroideries, peach blossom and lilies,'made an appropriate setting for an "International" afternoon at the recent meeting of'the Lower Hutt League of Mothers. Mrs. Dawson presided over a large attendance, and made sympathetic reference to the loss suffered by Mrs. Mentford in the death of her daughter, the members standing as a mark of Tespect; ■ ■ Members of the Mothers' Union were present as guests, Mrs. Fry (the president) receiving a bouquet. Mrs. Kersley welcomed the sister organisation, and Mrs. Dawson conveyed the felicitations of league members to Mrs. Attwood, a pioneer member, on reaching the golden anniversary of her wedding. The choir sang Chinese folk songs, harmonised and arranged by Dr. Koo, and enjoyable incidental music was contributed by Miss Connolly while tea was being served. The address, "China Through a Woman's Eyes," by. Miss Maud Dinneen, 8.A., of the Anglican .Chinese Missions, was followed with intense interest. In a graphic word picture she described a service hold before dawn in a Confucian temple, when rows of elderly, portly priests chanted together in deep and measured tones in honour of tho coming spring. The life of the women.with its many poignant tragedies, wihch are accepted as cvery-day occurrences, was held up in sharp contrast to the happiness and security of tho family life in Christian lands. Vivid descriptions of scenes, characteristic incidents of. Chinese life, and glimpses into the routine of the mission house, all held the. listeners in absorbed attention. ■'.'

Miss Dinneen was presented with an appropriate 'gift.
