Southerly gales have blown at places along.the east coast, and moderate to strong southcrltes prevailed generally yesterday, but since last night, except at East Cape, they have decreased everywhere in force and on the cast coast of th« South Island and In the far soutb the direction Is now northerly. The weather, hag been mainly fair to fine and cold, but a few isolated light southerly showers have fallen on the east coast of the North Island. Some hard inland frosts occurred last night, especially in th« South Island;
