HIDES AND SKINS SALES.
The firm tone in the hide market was maintained at the fortnightly auction held by Auckland brokers this week. Most lines sold at lute rates, but some of the best grades showed a slight improvement. There was a full bench of buyers, representing local and exporting interests. However, the latter operated within lower limits than the local tanners, who took the best of the offering. Dried sheepskins were easier by about Id per Ib, and salted sorts also sold at slightly lower value?. This was due to a fall in values overseas and the easing in the market for coarse wools. The extent ofjtlie appreciation in the Auckland hide and skin market is seen when present prices for old hides, about GVid to 6%d per lb, are compared with 3%d to-,4(1 paid at this time last year. Similarly, cow hides have advanced from 3%d per lb to 6d per lb. The vise in sheepskins has been even more marked, and is equivalent to about 100 per cent, in some grades. The higher prices have had the effect of attracting large offerings, and the quantities available at recent auctions have been the largest for some years.
