CONCILIATION PROCEEDINGS
The motor mechanics dispute was tho subject of proceedings before the Conciliation Commissioner (Mr. P. Hally) today. No agreement was reached, anil tho conditions which have been in force for the past twelve months will remain the same.
Mr. J. F. Cousins, advocate for the employers, said that a, meeting was held in June last year, when tho old award was still in operation, and as no agreement was reached the meeting was adjourned until June 23. On that occasion, also, no agreement was reached, and the award automatically lapsed on July 25, since when thers had been no award. "We notified all our members that tho award had lapsed, and we asked them to observe reasonable conditions," said Mr. Cousins. Last May tho employers were asked if they would accept the old award, but they were not prepared to do this. On a referendum being taken it was found that '82 per cent, of the employers were agreeable to carrying on for another twelve months without an award. The employees generally appeared to bo satisfied with the conditions under which _ they were working at present. The employers did not want to make an award just now.
