The opinion that matters commercially'are picking up aucj^ that the "world is on'the eve of-an era of gradually increasing prosperity was expressed by Mr1. Julian B. Foster, • - tho ■ American Trade Commissioner' in ■ New Zealand, who was one' of the guests of honour at a. farewell luncheon" tendered- by the English-speaking ' Union, today. Mr.' Foster's office iv. Now Zealand has been closed, and with his wife, he is leaving shortly for Washington. Mr. Foster thanked the members of tho union for their hospitality, saying that) most of' Jus .life 'hi, .fia.d" been a iroamer, but that for the .past, cii years, he . had been in Wellington.-;- He .felt now .that he was; .leaving more, friends behind than he had ever done in his life. The power for gooi of'the Eng-lish-speaking Union, was enormous, for undoubtedly the two leaders in the reconstruction era which, he believed was just around the corner would bo the United States; and Great Britain. He thought the future of the world depended on the friendship of the. people of these-, two countries,■ and it -had never been as close as it was today.. . . Tho American Consul-Geucral (Mr. Calvin M. Hitch), in the' course of his remarks, said that the closing of the American Trade Commissioner's .office in Wellington was due to no dissatisfaction on the part of the Government with the conduct of the affairs of the office,' but was solely- a-matter of economy. Mr. Hitch paid a tribute to Mr. Foster for tho efficient manner in which he had discharged his official duties. Besides Mr. arid Mrs, Foster, other guests at the luncheon 'were Mr., and Mrs. H. G.
