MAITAI RIVER VERY LOW
I (Special to the "Evoninp Post.") I NELSON, Juno 13. ( It is a long timo. since Kelson exI pcrienced a soaking rain awl at the j present time the Maitai River is running very low. At one portion between the Trafalgar and Collingwood Street bridges the water .is confined to a narrow channel of a few feet |in width on the northern side. Some years ago small craft could easily negotiate the-river well above the mouth, but with the filling in of tho bed aa the result of floods it is hardly possible for small launches to get beyond tho Trafalgar Street Bridge even at high tide. Mr. K. Exton, who was admitted to tho Nelson Hospital on Sunday suffering from a wound in the leg as the result of being accidentally shot whilo deer stalking at the AVangamoa, was reported today to bo progressing favourably. The funeral of tho late Captain F. L. Vickerman was largely attended. Representatives of business and shipping circles were present, together with many who had been associated with Captain Vickerman in his career. The service was conducted by Canon F. Quintrell. The pallbearers at the gravesido were Messrs. A. I. Brown (director and marine superintendent of the Anchor Company), A. K. Dyson (assistant manager);.Cap'tain Wildmaii, junior, and' Mr. W. Drake (representing the Merchant Service Guild), Messrs. J. A. Owen and W. Innis (representing the Engineers' Institute). Tho pallbearers at tho mortuary chapel were from the Oddfellows' Lodge-, Brothers F. G. McHardy, K. M. Black, AY. Thompson, A. T. Johnson, J. Heath, and G. Scott. The Oddfellows' service was read by Brother P. G. McHardy, Noble Grand. At a meeting of the Cawthron Trust Board, the chairman, Mr. AY. J. Moffatt, paid a tribute to tho work of the late Mr. William Rout, and after other speakers had supplemented the chairman's remarks the following resolution was carried: —"That this board expresses its sorrow and regret at its loss by the death of one of its members, Mr. William Rout, whose membership dates from the foundation of the trust and who had the honour of being the only one of the trustees holding office- in his own name being so distinguished by the .late Mr. Cawithron in his will. The board also places on record its appreciation of the valuable services rendered by the late Mr. Rout as a member of the board, and as a tribute to his memory will place in the Cawthron Institute au enlarged photograph of him suitably inscribed. The board also tenders to Mrs. Bout and the members of tho family its deep sympathy and condolences in their bereavement together with a copy of this resolution."
