FACTORY EXTERNALS DAIRYMEN WAKING UP

Beauty without suggests cleanliness within, and it does not pay a dairy factory to be uncleanly and unbeautiful in. its surroundings. . In Victoria the beautiflcation of dairy factories has received some attention, and New South Wales is waking up too. At the recent annual congress of dairy factory managers the prizewinning essay on factory beautification, submitted by Mr. F. Gibbs, was read by the author, who emphasised that this State was now approaching Victoria in the development of the work. He emphasised the loss of dignity to expensive buildings by untidy surroundings, and the necessity for a carefully tended environment where food products were being handled. Hedges, trees, and shrubs, lawns and flower beds, should bo brought into use, and all outbuildings well maintained and constructed. As chairman of the committeo conducting the butter factories' surroundings beautification scheme, Mr. P. C. Basche said that the committee had boon very heartened by the reports from Mr. Maclnnes, director of dairying, which stated that the scheme had been responsible for a great improvement and smartening up of the factories. Further, that excellent foundations wore being laid by many factories for future beautifieation work. Mr. Patrick Grant, who distributed the prizes in this section, also referred to the big improvement in the factories of recent years, but said that a number of big factories could yet do more in this direction.
