RUGBY FOOTBALL
PROMOTION OF TEAMS ORIENTAL SUCCESSFUL
The management committee of .the Wellington Rugby Union, decided' by ballot last . night that p£ . the three senior A grade second division teams, Oriental, University, and Johnsonville, who finished the first round on equal terms in second' place, Oriental should be promoted to the first division. The. othor team to go up is St. Patrick's College Old Boys, who had a lead over the other three teams. The chairman (Mr. J. Prendeville) said that when the scheme was inaugurated lie had suggested that if there was a tie somo of the matters taken into consideration sho,uld include points against and the improvement shown by the respective teams. The. position was fairly, even between the three teams so far as points were concerned. Mr. J. N. Millard said lie thought all three ; teams were worthy of promotion. Mr. 11. D. Morgan said he had no hesitation in saying that the most improved team was Johnsonville. He did not think the meeting should reach a decision by drawing the names out of a hat. Mr. A. Griffiths advanced the claims of University. . ' ■ ' Mr. J. Moflitt said that in view of the fact that Oriental were unfortunate in going down- last year, it seemed to him that on principle they should be the team to be promoted this year. Mr. Jlillard. moved that the team to go up be decided by lot, but Major T. King said'he was definitely against that. The chairman: The only alternative is a ballot. • The matter was then decided accord-, ingly.' . ' The question as to what team in the senior B grade would be the fourth to enter the second division of the A grade was also decided by ballot, Hutt being successful, Wellington thus remaining in the B grade. The four teams to be promoted are Onslow, Petouc, Ponekc, and Hutt.
