A MISTAKEN IDEA
RANFURLY SHIELD GAMES
SPECIAL CHALLENGES
It is stated by the " Christchurch Star" that "tho question of special challenges for the Eanfurly Shield, which 'is now under consideration by tho New Zealand Eugby Union, consequent upon Canterbury's refusal of challenges from AVellington and Waikato, is. one that is always apt to cause trouble." A further explanation is made regarding tho position between Wellington and .Canterbury, with the following concluding note: "However, the matter is under tho review of the New Zealand Union, which will doubtless take all the circumstances into consideration. 'Tho ruling on the matter will bo interesting." So far as tho New Zealand Union is concerned, the matter of Canterbury's refusal to meet Wellington in a special challenge match for the Eanfurly Shield has not even been discussed, and Wellington's interest officially ended when Canterbury's explanation was '' received.'' At its last meeting the New Zealand Eugby Union's managej meut committee received without comment Canterbury's advice as to challenges accepted and declined, but it' decided on Canterbury's application for a' ruling regarding tho "special" match with King Country to seek further information as to the position of other unions whose challenges were accepted. Tlio committee was not certain whether such challenges as those by West Coast, Buller, and Ashburton, were to be regarded in tho same light as that by King Country. Tho declining of Wellington's challenge never came into the* matter.
