DEPUTATION TO MINISTER

NEW RAILWAY STATION

A request that the Public Works Department should put in hand certain works, including the new Wellington railway station, was made to the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. J. Bitche'ner) by a deputation from the Wellington Trades and Labour Council; yesterday. The ■ deputation,' which included Messrs. F. Cornwell, secretary of tho council, J. Moulton, secretary of the Carpenters' Union, Thompson, secretary of tho Plumbers' Union, ' and Shannon, secretary of the Painters' Union, was introduced by Mr. P. Fraser, M.P., who stated that the requests to be made had the support of the Labour members of Parliament of the Wellington district. The speakers urged that the Public Works Department should put in hand the renovating of a number of Government buildings which were in urgent ued of repair. This work,1 which should be done at standard rates of pay, would give employment to a-large number of men. It was also suggested that the new Wellington railway station should be proceeded with on the same lines as the National Museum and Art Gallery. Protests were made against the low rate of pay for tradesmen in the Public Works Department.
