KING'S BIRTHDAY

ACCLAIMED IN LONDON

LOYALTY AND AFFECTION

REMARKABLE SCENES

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, June 3. The celebration of the King's sixty-eighth, birthday evoked a. remarkable- demonstration of loyalty and affection at Buckingham Palace, while the guns thundered the salute in St. James's Park. The, King was unable to wear uniform and ride owing to rheumatism, and watched the Prihce of Wales, in the uniform of a colonel of the Welsh Guards, mounted on. a bay charger, lead, the cavalcade, including the Duke_ of York, the Duke of Gloucester, Prince Arthur of Connaught, and many distinguished soldiers, from the Palace through cheering throngs to the Horse Guards Parade, where the Prince of Wales represented his Majesty at the trooping of the colour. The Queen, the Princess Eoyal, the Duchess of York, and Princess Elizabeth watched the picturesque ceremonial. Later, the Eoyal ladies joined his Majesty on a balcony at Buckingham Palace, and watched three battalions of Guards march- past, the Prince of Wales taking the salute in the courtyard. As the- troops departed an immense crowd filled the space before the Palace. Their Majesties returned to the balcony and were greeted with a storm of cheering, which grew in volume until it drowned the music of the> Guards' massed bands. The King, bareheaded, bowed, smiled, and waved his hand repeatedly in recognition' of the demonstration, which lasted for several minutes. The King, in a message to the Lord Mayor, expressed thanks for the city's birthday greetings and good wishes, adding that he was confident the future would restore a harassed world needing peace and prosperity.
