TROTTING

CANTEKBURY PARK

SOME KEEN RACING

(Special to the "Evening Post.") CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The Winter Meeting of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club was commenced at Addington on. Saturday, in bright sunshine. Rain earlier in the Sveek made the track soft, but though some of the horses did not act well on it, the racing 'was very interesting, there being several close finishes. ';■■ The Progressive Handicap was an even betting race between Real ;Belle, Amonos, and Olson. Amonos settled his chance by breaking badly at the end of a furlong. Real .Belle was in front "all' the way, and won comfortably, thanks t.o mistakes by her rivals. ■ Modern Girl. Kvent off fast, and joined Real Belle after six furlongs, but a- little further oh she retired. Olson was alongside Real Belle three furlongs from home; but broke at the entrance to the. straight. El Merit then .put in a strong challenge,, but. tangled fifty yards ■from the post, leaving Real Belle to win easily. Olson got going'again and stalled off Modern Girl for -, third. Real Belle has raced well this'season,-.this being.her fifth .success.'^ ".'Olson looked like being hard to beat but for his break. El Merit, formerly owned' by Mr; J. R. Corrigan, may; do well for :E. C. McDermott. Royal Chenault and. Lord Leslie made the early running in ' the,.'Harewood Handicap, but Chenwood joined Lord Leslie in the lead after two furlongs. With half a mile gone Chenwood broke, and passing the stand Lord' Leslie had Antrim, Royal Chenault, and Reporter as his nearest attendants, with Rare Pronto and Erin's Princess handy. Ulm moved up along, the back.. Three furlongs from home Lord; Leslie, was showing the way to Reporter, who finished on solidly, getting up on the:. post to'win by a', head. Erin's Princess was six lengths way,- with Ulm next. Rare Pronto, Antrim, mid Royal Chenault failed to stay. ■ Smooger broke at the start. — The..winner.; a three-year-old by Wrack, is a very, solid customer, ..liable to''go. on to good class. ; He had; won''three-..times previously this season. ; : V .•'■"'■' • N :

HIGH CLASS PERFORMANCE

The King George Handicap was a fine race. Colonial Boy' and Little Guy were showing the way after two 'furlongs, and a little further on , Little Guy was in charge, with Colonial" Boy, Grand Light, >feeoro, and .Gold Tinge... next. JSfeeoro took the lead'at the mile;post, and starting on the last lap First Flight, Gold Tinge, and Sunny-Morn were : in line behind Mm. Neeoro broke half a mile from home, Gold Tinge going on from First Flight, ■ Sunny Morn, and Harvest Child, closely followed by the trotter • Olive Nelson, who had moved up gradually after .a slow beginning. These five Svere in" a: bunch at the entrance to the. straight. .First Flight wore Gold Tinge down, and won by half a length. Sunny Moni • was.; a length away third, and ■Harvest' 'Child fourth. The winner, who /is" owned in the Waikato by Mr> . \V. -Johnstone, is a recent addition/- to ;.0,..5., Donald's team. She won. like , a high-class mave. , Olive Nelson trotted in great style, with none the best" of luck over] the last half-mile.- . .■'..' .■ ' '. ■ The Elevation Handicap provided sonic interest for a mile arid a half, after which the field strung out..' Mr.. Penalty left Katute for half a mile, when Gay Paree headed them, Great Burton, Belle Lorrimer, and Stanley Bingen being, next. Mr. Penalty started to drop back at the mile post, where Mountain Mist put in an appearance. Katute was in charge from Mountain Mist three furlongs from home, with Great Burton handy. Katute was in trouble at the entrance to the straight, where Stanley Bingen was going well. Mountain Mist went on to beat Great Burton by half a length, Stanley Bingen being' three lengths away, with Katute next. Mountain Mist has made great improvement this season, and he is a candidate for. better, company, .as.'-he is a,very, ssolid trotter.", •*■. CRAGANOUR EASING UP

•The Pioneer- Handicap was not very exciting, despite the fact that the field was bunched most of the Waj'. • Jolly Wave made all the running, "but: Craganour,' in second place, was always going .well.' He shot out when the straight was reached, and won easing.up, butilie gave the public a 1 thrill, as he was easing up-in-the lasi fifty yards, and' : Jolly. Wave came •with a late rush, getting .within.a length of the winner at the post. Wrecker went fast in patches,- and- stayed on to' beat Checkers for third. War Paint was done at the end.of a mile and a Quarter, and 1 Wilbur White, faded out two furlongs fr'om'home. The winner is an improving pacer, who has been racing well all this season, and he will, be in good company next season. ■-, . • : A'big field of speedy horses contested the Advance Handicap, in which Avernus led all the way. . He was followed by Meteor, Harvest Child, Tempest, Probationer, and Ngingongingo in the early stages. Sir Guy moved up fast along the back, and three furlongs' from home he headed Ngingongingo to take third place, only Avernus and Meteor ■ being ■ in,. front of them. There was no further change, Av«rnus.-. • winning /easily. Probationer failed to stay, after having to cover a lot of ground;m the .earl» stages. Avernus paced, a fine race^; HeMs only a four-year-old, and he will improve. His stablemate, Sir Guy,:,put in a great run after going sis furlongs, and his performance to get third ,\vas a. good one. 'Meteor -was stlways going -well.': ■ ■; !; :. 'The Telegraph' Handicap provided a Sood contest, with a. close finish. Author Franz-•and.Matclimaker-..were showjng the way ~at the . end ,of ,t\Vq furlongs, ..with Pronto'Bingen, Taxpayer,, Manoeuvre, and Master Boy n'e'sti in"V. a bunched fi>ld. Pronto Bingen'took'charge from Taxpayer three furlongs : from:"home, - with Master Roy- and-Matchmaker:-next. In 4 good finish Master ; Koy. beat Taxaayer By half a- length, ■■•■ Pi-onto Bingen was half a length away, a neck jn front of. Manoeuvre, who lost a"lot'bf'ground' through breaking half a mile from home. Indianapolis was next. The winner was' secured by B. Grice at a Dunedin meeting, just over a year ago, and went into 0. E._ Hooper's stable. This was his first' win since then. Taxpayer has gron-n into a good-looking horse," and he may develop into high class. Matchmaker failed to stay-. The Au Eevoir Handicap, a mile saddle event, drew the smallest field of the day, there being only seven starters. Denver City led out from Gumdigger and Awa-iti, while Jolly Wave and John Jinks were handy.at the end of two furlongs. . Jolly Wave took second place at th,e end-; of half a mile, but a furlong further on John Jinks joined Denver City in the lead. They turned for home together, and ■though John Jinks had an advantage of about half a length fifty yards from the post, Denver City put in a late challenge, tq be beaten by a head. Jolly Wave was thWe lengths away-, beating Gumdigger by a head. Sodium made a strong run from the three-furlong post, but failed, to come on in the final furlong. 'John Jinks was a brilliant two-year-old, and though he has not developed into a stayer, he is a brilliant miler. In this race he was set a big task, as he made up,his handicap fast and- covered a lot ;of ground. :
