MASTERTON TOURNEY
The Masterton tournament, which commenced on the King's Birthday, proved a most successful meeting. Owing to the daily rain during the previous week, some of the greens were very tricky, but the fairways were in good .condition. There were no very striking scores in the quahiying round, though Hornabrook went out in 34. The return journey took him 42. Horton headed the qualifying round with two 77's. Hornabrook was next with 156. Then came Campbell-Heard and B. M. Silk 158, R. J. Hatch (Palmcrston North) IC3, Rana AA 7agg 164, and P. AVhitcombe 168. .In- the first round of the championship, AA 7ickens, a Masterton colt, took the veteran Campbell-Heard to the nineteenth. R. Hatch, the Palmerston North youngster, easily disposed of Boys in the morning. In the afternoon he met Brian Silk, and both played good golf up to the seventh, .when Silk put in his run, taking five holes in succession. The results of' the first round of the AVairarapa championship were:—Horton beat Broad 5 and 3; Borthwick beat Aplin 4 and 3; Hatch beat Boys^" and 6: Silk beat Jameson 5 and 4; Campbell-Heard beat AA 7ickens. at the nineteenth; AVagg beat Frost 6 and 5; P. AA 7hitcombe beat Armstrong 2 up; Hornabrook beat George 6 and 5. In the second round Horton beat Borthwick 3 and 2; Silk beat Hatch 5 and 4; Hornabrook beat Whitcombe 4 and 3; AVagg beat Campbell-Heard 2 and 1. In the semi-finals AA Tagg meets Hornabrook and Horton meets Silk. The first medal competition was won by R. Hatch, with'Bo, 12—68. and the second medal by N. N. Irwin, 85, 18—67.
