CALL TO PEAYEE

WORLD CONFERENCE HOPES

In keeping with the appeal made by the Archbishop o£ Canterbury to all Christians to observe Sunday, June 11. as a day o£ prayer for the success of the World Economic Conference, which will open ou the following day, Archbishop Averill on Friday made a similar appeal to the people of New Zealand (states the '"New Zealand Herald"). "The appeal, which is approved by his Majesty the King, will undoubtedly meet with a ready response from all men and women of goodwill in this Dominion," said Archbishop Averill. "The issues involved are of such vital importance, uot only to the Empire, but to the whole world, that the representatives of the nations should be strengthened and supported by the spiritual and moral backing of their respective countries, not only in seeking to find a solution of the world's economic problems, but in endeavouring to unite the nations of the earth in a great international brotherhood in which fear, suspicion, jealousy, and hatred will be replaced by goodwill, confidence, arid trust. "The dangers which beset such a conference are so obvious that it needs something greater than the wit of man to endue the members with a right spirit, a comprehensive vision, and a world outlook, and there surely is where the prayers and aspirations of all.men and women of goodwill can make a real con-1 tribution to' the work of the Conference. 'Where there is no vision the people perish,' and if there is no real vision, no real desire to arrive at conclu- j sions beneficial to all nations and so remove grounds for suspicion and create a better understanding, the Conference can only end in failure, and. the last state of the world will be worse than the first. "It is our privilege and duty to attempt to create a spiritual force in the Conference and to join with men and women of goodwill throughout the world in invoking the Divine blessing upon the work of: the Conference so that hope and confi-! dence may be restored to a distracted j world and the overhanging clouds re- j moved from the world's economic'and international horizon. We must pray not only on June 11, but on every day of the Conference, for 'Except the Lord build the house, their labour is but lost that build it." j
