HAWKE'S BAY FLOODS
RED CROSS ASSISTANCE
Advice was received today by Mr. J. Abel, ehairjnan of the Dominion execu-tive-of the New Zealand Red Cross Society, from Mr. C. 0. Morse, Mayor of Napier, to the effect.that the Napier Red Cross Society has undertaken ' tho whole of the distribution of food, clothing, and bedding to the settlers affected by the floods in the Meanee district. A sub-committee of farmers has been set up to deal with grazing and fodder' for the ' livestock, and a relief fund was opened thi3 morning.' There,are about seventy settlers in the Meanee area, and between ISOO and 2000 acres' lying in a basin formed by the Napier earthquake are under water. Steps are being taken to cut channels to release the flood waters, but it-is likely to bo a long job. Food, clothing, and bedding are urgently needed. Mr. Abel has.sent a telegram to the chairman of the Red Cross Society, Napier, intimating that the .Dominion executive will contribute £25 to the relief fund, ahd will give further assistance if circumstances require it. The New Zealand Red Cross^Socie.ty has a disaster relief fund whici was established: as a result of thegjNapier earthquake. Several hundipds of pounds are immediately avaiilnpe for the relief of distress in any.|f pat t of New Zealand.
