TRAGEDY IN HOTEL

MAN AND WIFE DEAD

SEVERE THROAT WOUNDS

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WANGANUI, June 4. Early on Saturday afternoon a double tragedy occurred at the Metropolitan Hotel, Taupo Quay, resulting in the deaths 'of Joseph Nathaniel Gordon, aged 32, of Patea, and his wife, Nell Gordon, aged 27. The two victims were discovered by an acquaintance, who had left the room for' a few minutes. Apparently death had been caused in both instances by severe razor wounds in the throat. Mrs. Gordon arrived from Patea last Tuesday, and had been staying with friends. Her husband for several years had been in the fellmongering department at the Patea Freezing Works, but recently had been out of employment. He came to Wanganui the following day to endeavour to persuade her to return home, she having announced her decision to go to Australia on Saturday. In consequence of a telegram she received, Mrs. Gordon went to the Wanganui railway station and met her husband and Stanley Thompson, who until recently had been secretary to the Belief Workers' Depot at Patea, but who resigned early last'week. The three called at the Metropolitan Hotel nearby, and went into '-the commercial room. Drinks for three were taken in, and a moment or two later Thompson stepped out to speak to the licensee. On his return he found Mrs. Gordon lying dead on the floor. Close by lay Gordon, who died a few minutes after the doctor arrived. It is believed that a razor was found nearby.
