APPOINTING OBSERVERS

As a means of. securing a better understanding between town and country, the Wanganui Farmers' Union has suggested that a representative of the Chamber of Commerce should attend meetings of Farmers' Unions, and a farmers' representative should be present at Chamber of Commerce meetings. When the proposal was made one farmer thought it Utopian, and referred to the high exchange contro-^ versy. "That's just the point," replied the mover. "We are both trying to push one barrow. If we could only put the two loads in one cart we would find it easier to get there." Of course, there will still be disputes as to who owns the cart and who is responsible for the load; but official observers will be able to remove many points of difference. A somewhat similar experiment has been made' by inviting representatives of Government commercial departments to join the Chamber of Commerce executive. So. far as we are aware it has been successful in promoting a better understanding on both sides' of the business of the parties. If farmers and commercial men occasionally come together in the same way it will be better than working separately as they do now until they meet in a clash.
