WORKING MEN'S CLUB

The forty-fourth annual chess and draughts meeting of, tho Wellington Working Men's Club and Literary Institute was held on Friday evening, 26 members being present. Mr. H. J. Shanks, the president, who occupied the chair, was supportd by Captain Barcham (vicepresident) and five members of the club's general committee, Messrs. Ballard, Rigby, Lane, Toomathj arid Davies. The annual report presented by the hon. secretary (Mr. H. M. Rosenberg) stated that there were 20 competitors for the chess championship of the club, which was won by S. Faulknor with 17 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss." Ernest E. Hicks is the runner-up, having defeated X.. Beyer in playing-off a. tie for second placo. Mr. Hicks", has accordingly been nominated for the league s champion-of-champlons tourney, for which Mr. Faulknor Is not available. The annual handicap chess tourney was'won by K. Beyer, the second, prize going to ,1 H Ottaway. During the season nine ladder matches were played, of which six were won by the challengers'and three by the defenders The club's senior team shared second place with the Xgaio Club In the league's A grade teams tourney. The junior team is congratulated on winning the league's B grade competition, in which nine teams took part. The club was represented by F.K. Helling in the league's annual champion-of-champions event, which was won by G. P. Anderson, the Wel(ington South-Club's nominee. . Mr. K. Beyer was the club's competitor in the congress held In Auckland during the Christmas holidays to decido the chess, championship of New Zealand. The entry was a stronger one than usual, and Mr. Beyer did not reach tho prize list, but he. gained valuable experience tiiat should ■ assist him in future Campaigns. Feeling-reference is made to . the death of tho club's president' (Mr. A. D. Tlckard), who passed away, on Christmas Day. at the early age of 47 years. This is the third president of the club (which was founded in 1877) to die in harness.. The death is also recorded of Mr. C. J. Ellison, who was a valued presi-, dent in 1900 and 1901. M. E. Goldstein (Sydney, N.S.W.)/ J. A. Ersklne (Invorcarglll), E. H. Severne (Nelson), A. Schliehting (Gisborne), C. Amtman (Dunedin). R. 0. Scott (Wanganui), and E. V. Blazek (France). Thanks are accorded to ail who have rendered assistance during the year. The annual report was" adopted on the motion of the chairman (Mr. Shanks), who, it 1? interesting to note, is the first presided to compete for the club's chess championship.
