CONFERENCE AT UPPER HUTTj
'A visit is to bo made to Upper Hutt by the Minister of Employment (tit* Hou. A. Hamilton), according t» * statement given, to "The Post" by; Councillor J. Purvis, of the Upper Hutt' Borough Council. Councillor Purvis, who is interesting himself in the unemployment problems in the district, said that ho had seen the Minister recently and placed beforai him several grievances, including tho contention that Upper Hutt should be' treated for relief purposes similarly to Lower Hutt and . Petone. Prior ta the slump, said Councillor Purvis, tha larger proportion of the workers in and around Upper Hutt, Trentham, and Silverstream, worked in Wellington, Petone, and Lower Hutt, and today, they were "right up against it equally; with residents of these towns." Mr', Hamilton had agreed to visit Upper! Hutt on his return from the South.' Island) to inquire into tho whole matter in a round-table talk with the Upper Hutt Borough Council, tho local Unemployment Committee, representatives of tho unemployed, and others inter> ested. The member for the district (tha Hon. A. D. McLcod) has written to Mr. Purvis, agreeing with his contentions. Mr. McLeod is unable through pressure of other business to attend tho conference, but has written to the Minister supporting Mr. Purvis's views. • At the meeting of the Borough Coua* cil last night it was decided to invittf representatives of tho various religioM bodies to attend tho conference, wMeK will probably, be helduext-jveek. __,^3
