RESOLUTIONS ADOPTED
The annual meeting of the New Zealand Alliance at its concluding session received the report of the committee appointed to consider the policy statement, and then ! unanimously adopted the statement as submitted and already published. The following resolutions on various aspects of the liquor problem were unanimously carried:— Drink Bill.—That in view of the continued unemployment and distress, the expenditure of between five and six million pounds per annum on intoxicating liquor is deplorable; the sum thus spent exceeding the total amount of Government expenditure on unemployment reiief; and that the diversion of money spent on intoxicating liquor to the purchase of useful commodities would increase employment, relieve distress, and be of substantial benefit to the community generally. Sports Gatherings.—That in view of the large number of young people attracted by sports gatherings, such as motor racing and the like, and the dangers attendant upon the presence of alcoholic liquor at such events, licensing authorities be urged to refuse to grant conditional licences to sell alcoholic liquor at such gatherings. Motoring.—That in view of the demand of the Federation of New Zealand Justices' Association that licences of motorvehicle drivers shall be cancelled on conviction for being intoxicated in charge of a motor-vehicle, the New Zealand Alliance again urges the advisability of the Transport and Health Departments cooperating in the issue, to all motor-vehicle drivers and applicants for licences, of a card or leaflet warning them of the dangers arising from the consumption of even small quantities of alcoholic liquor by those driving motor-vehicles.
