USING WASTE WOOD
(To the Editor.) Shy—l submit the following suggestions as a means of providing productive work for the unemployed. There are districts round about Kaetihi, both Government and private land, where fallen timber is lying on the ground rotting away. Married and single men could be employed clearing this land, cordjng all the; good firewood, posts, etc., and burning off all rubbish. In this way the land would be made valuable for farming purposes, and the posts aud battens could be sold to fanners in districts where there is no busli. The firewood could be sent to various towns, and some sold to merchants, bakers, and Government departments, and the balance be distributed free to the unemployed. I feel sure that the firewood and posls sold would more than pay the cost of haulage, upkeep of men, and largely assist in paying their relief wages. I feel" sum that the Railway Department would be more than willing to haul
the firewood to the towns at, very low rates, sooner than run with empty trucks. The Unemployment Board would save money, the Government and private landowners would have valuable land cleared, j and there would be plenty pffiriug for unemployed families. Working under this idea, larger wages could be paid to the workers, tents and gear could be supplied by the Government, or timber could be obtained from the Government lands.paft Eaetihi, sawn up in the Government mill on tlie reserve,* and sectional hutments built. Many families are, through unemployment, suffering in the cold 'weather. Yet there are thousands upon thousands of acres of fallen bush within 180 miles of Wellington, just rotting on the .'ground. —I urn, etc., ERNEST E. EARNSHAW.
