BOXING

WELLINGTON ASSOCIATION

BRIGHTER PROSPECTS

Although the past season had resulted in a financial loss the opinion vas expressed at the annual meeting of the Wellington Boxing Association last night that the prospects for the coming season were much brighter, and it was stated that arrangements were now in train for the importation of several -well-known overseas boxers. The meeting was presided over by the president, Mr. 11. W. MeVilly, and there was a fair attendance of members. In moving the' adoption of the animal report and balance-sheet (which has already been published in "The Post"). Mr. McVilly said that, having regard to the difficult-circumstances through which the country was passing, the association had reason to congratulate itself pu maintaining the "position it had attained in regard, to its finances. It was true the association had finished up the year with a drop of about. £390'0n .the.balance which had been'carried over from the presidus year, but this might.be said to be almost entirely, due to the prevailing conditions. Indeed, the association had cause, for congratulation that it had any credit balance at all. With regard to tbe present' season, as members were aware, the Hughcs-Oxlcy tournament in April had resulted in a small deficit, but that might be put down to the bad weather that night. From advice which had been received from Australia it would appear that Jimmy Kelso Mas willing to come across to box under the Wellington Association, and the matter of terms and suitable opponents would have to be considered by, the incoming committee. In. this connection it would appear that the committee would have to give serious attention to the question of forfeiting the lease of the show stadium, and if this was done it would mean that the association would have to pay about £240. In considering the matter, however, thought -would have to be given to the contests which were in view for the coming year. Arrangements had also been made by the committee for an interchange of visits between teams of amateurs from Auckland and Wellington, and this should do much to. popularise still more the amatuer side of the sport. EXPENDITURE ON AMATEURS. In seconding the motion, Mr. A. Curtayne, chairman of the Management Committee of the association, expressed regret that, the committee could not show a better balance-sheet, but the association's position was not as bad as a cursory glance at the balance-sheet would make it at first appear. ' Mr. Curtayne estimated that the year's working had resulted in a loss of about £140, and this included £128 which had been spent in buying amateurs' trophies and medals and in expenses for teams travelling. It had been difficult to get professional matches during the past year, as the demands.for purses had not come down with the times, and the committee had felt that its duty was to conserve the funds of the association as much as possible rather than take any undue risks. The amateur side of the sport had flourished marvellously, and there were now more amateur boxers than at any time in the history of the association. The scene for future contests would, of course, be a question which would engage the serious attention of the incoming committee, and negotiations in this connection were now in progress. Mr. Curtayne concluded by expressing the opinion that the coming season would be considerably better and brighter than the last, and he said that he was optimistic enough to hope that the association had now turned the corner.
