' A representative conference of local bodies, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Unemployed Association, convened by the Mayor, held last night a resolution that in the interests of the unemployed workers' security of- teim'ra of their homes the Government be re--commended to find ways of subsidising at least CO per cent, of the .rental or interest payments, say within a Hmi,t ot, 10s for married men with no children, 12s 6d for those with not more than two children,. and 15s for those with threa or more children, the higher scales to b» contingent on the houses providing noteless than three and four rooms respectively; the payment to be niaclai direct to the landlord or mortgagee, who is required to file an application, tot, such supplementary assistance. It was urged, that', until fhe board was able to pay all the unemployed th» full announced basis, all schemes such! as small farm plans, etc., involving the expenditure of relief money, be dis« continued. In the opinion of the meeting unemployment moneys should not be used for settling men on the land* but solely for the relief of distress and unemployment. . It was contended that all schemes, except the No. 5 Scheme, bo cut out until it was functioning equitably) throughout the country, and it vras decided to draw the board's attention to the disparity between the amounts paid! to the town and country workers -at Waipukurau, compared "with the largef[ centres. It was stated that the position was urgent as there was little sea*, sonal work obtainable.
