Mention was made in yesterday's issue.of the completion of tramway, and roadwork at what has been called "the horseshoe bend," where Glcn-| more Street, after passing under lhc | massive viaduct, grades quickly up-i ward in a rising half-circle lhatj climbs to the floor of the viaduct! itself; then the road bends away in further short curves into and through I tho Karori tunnel, the whole'movement forming a kind of S,"wilh the Karori end of the S overlooking a sharply-cut valley, the sides of which are adorned with original native vegetation —except where the modern Jam Tin Gully displays its flotsam and jetsam. In natural structure, this is one of the most interesting parts of Wellington, cut in places with earthquake tools. A little up the valley, towards the reservoir, are old tunnels,,said to be of goldmining origin,land near the aforementioned old metal depot the City Council has lately done some. tunnelling of its own. But the portion specially mentioned yesterday was the "horseshoe bend" on the city side of, the tunnel, which calls for beautification; and if the beautifying artist can solve the problem.of the steep slopes, this should become one of the ■ prettiest spots of the. city tramway system. In these days of the cult of the indigenous, New Zealand plants would be appropriate, though exotic shelter may be needed in the first place. It is to be hoped that the Reserves Committee, on its tour, viewed this locality with the eye of a seer. Its remarkable lay-out can be seen at once, but something more is needed to envisage the beauty spot it might become.
