COLLEAGUES' DEFENCE
John Joseph McClintoek was charged at the Supreme Court yesterday afternoon before Mr. Justice Blair and a jury -with breaking and entering and theft ;it Uio I'opt Ofikc at Moera, Lowpr Hut):, on April 2. The accused, who pleaded not guilty, ivu.s defended by Mr. G. Kent. Mr. C. IDvans-Scott, who appeared for the prosecution, said the charges against the accused arose out of the1 fact that the Post Office at Moera was broken into on April 2. The front door was broken, and the rear' door had been forced open. The safe was tipped over. Three men had been charged with the offence, including the accused. The other two men had pleaded guilty, but McClintock pleaded not guilty. At ' about 5.30 a.m. a lad who was'delivering milk saw two men at the back of the Post Office and a man in a motorcar in front of the Post Office. Tho accused had admitted to the police that he drove out from the city with the two men who had pleaded guilty, but
denied that ho had entered the Por.6 Office. ■ ''.'■■ \ Evidence was tendered similar to that given in'tin: Magistrate's Court. Alexander Graham, oho of the prisoners who had admitted the crime, said in evidence that the accused.'was not. guilty of breaking and entering and (heft; he had simply pat in the car. Witness admitted that lie and Graham were the guilty parties. His Honour: The statement you havu just made is a serious one. It mean* that you swore falsely 'apparently in. the Magistrate's Court. You admit that that statement was false?—;Ye,s.
