TURF NEWS IN BRIEF

Beacon Fire, who is a fancied lightweight for. the AJt.C' Cornwall Handicap nest; month, has.' also, heen. accorded a nomination for the open .sprint, run on the same day. Jonathan, Prolyso, and Chromadyne also claim the two engagements. .* There are no less than 61 hacks entered for the Jervois Handicap, seven furlongs, to be run oh the opening day of the Auckland Winter fixture. This event is almost certain to be run in two divisions, and as there are only seven races on the opening day's programme at Ellerslie each division will be treated as a separate race. Fairway, who won at both Marton and Hawera recently, was given a long spell after he had won at the former meeting twelve months earlier. Being a big-framed gelding for a three-year-old his owner, Mr. W. Millar, of Palmerston. North, wisely decided to spell him and thus give him every chance to develop, although he was quite sound, and the success of the lot-up at that stage was indicated by the manner in which Fairway disposed of the opposition at Hay/era and Marton. Steeplechases, for so many years a. prominent feature of the wiuter meetings at Gisborne, have disappeared from the pro-' gramme for the nest fixture at the East Coast centre. This is not surprising, although regrettable, for these events had not drawn good fields for years.past. Mile hack;races have been substituted.' . Just what the handicapper thinks of that good hack Takakua is evident by the 8.0 he has awarded the Royal Divorce gelding in the Empire Handicap "at W;inganui next week, aud it will1 be interesting to see how this very promising handicap performer shapes in this company. His Feilding form last month was firstclass, but he will be well tried out if produced at Wanganui. ■ Latest advices from the south state that Aladdin has almost got over his disability, which was the cause of his owner's change of plans with regard to racing the horse at Wanganui. Aladdin has been entered for the six furlongs Longbeach Hack at Ashburton nest week, after which he will p'-obably race at Dunedin if the Auckland trip is finally abandoned, as seams likely. - ■ ■ Thespis schooled well at Takanini on Tuesday morning last and is consolidating; his position as favourite for the Great Northern Hurdles. The Hiker, a hurdler of the tearaway type, who has yet to gain a place in any race, also went well tor the mile and a quarter over four hurdles, and • there is hope for him if he could only stick on. He is engaged, as is Thespis, in the hack hurdles event at Te Rapa next week. Acceptances for the first _ day of the tyanganui J.C. Winter Meeting closo at 9 p.m. tomorrow (Friday). Nominations for the Woodville J.C. fixture on May 27 also close at 9 p.m. tomorrow (Friday).
