THE SOUTHLAND MEETING
Six flat races;1, one steeplechase, and a trotting event comprise the programme for the opening 'tomorrow of the Southland Racing Club's Winter Meeting, and with pretty fair fields engaged all round the sport will bo of- importance m view of the Dunedin fixture following three weeks hence. The principal fiat race is the Southland j Cup, which has a field of eight, headed by j that useful horse, The Smuggler., He has a heavy weight to carry, iv whatsis going j to be heavy going, and he may still run a good race. Mount Boa is erratic at times, but if he repeats his Washdyke finishing run, which'was of'the sensational order, he would be unbeatable. Salmo Salar is expected to show improvement, while the lightweight divisiou • will probably set a good pace. Sahno Salar and Mount Boa are well placed to bother the topweight. •■ . .' ■ The first race is timed to commence at 11.35 a.m. .
