NO CHANGE YET
CONFERENCE CONTINUED
There was no change in the shipping position this morning, the wharves being very largely idle. The conference' between representatives of the shipowuers, the Alliance of Labour, the Seamen's Union, and the Cooks and Stewards' Union was continued this morning after a sitting till 9 o'clock last night, but at the time of, writing no announcement had been made as to the outcome of the long discussion, except that nothing of a definite nature resulted from yesterday's meetings. The conference adjourned shortly after 1 o'clock, and reassembled an hour later. No statement was issued as to any progress made towards reaching an agreement. It has treen stated-* that the waterside workers also met the employers yesterday, but Mr. J. Roberts, of the Watersiders' Federation, denies that any such conference took place. The attitude generally has been that the watersiders so far have declined to work cargoes on ships not manned by union crews where union crews have been displaced. ■The Maori and ATahura sailed for Lyttelton and Nelson at the usual times last night, All coastal boats in harbour, with the exception of1 the Rangatira, which arrived this morning, are today simply lying at the wharves, "with practically no cargo operations going on. There were no incidents on the wharves or in the vicinity of the wharves this morning. A heavy barricade is being constructed on the Thorndon breastwork by Harbour Board employees in order to keep all : unauthorised persons off that portion of the wharves, most of the other wharves being equipped with permanent gates.
