THE SMITH FAMILY
ANNUAL MEETING
The annual meeting of the -New Zealand Smith Family, Inc., was held last evening, the chairman of the organisation presiding over, a fairly .large attendance of members. ; ' ' ' ' In moving the adoption of the annual report,\ which has already been published in "The Post;" the chairman outlined some of the Family's projected activities for the ensuing year. It was hoped, he said, to be able to make arrangements for the manufacture of various types of garments,, utilising: unemployed workers for this work, At present four unemployed tailors were cleaning, repairing, and pressing garments donated to the organisation. It was also h^ped to inaugurate a special campaign to ensure an adequate supply of milk for those in need, particularly for women and children. If. was proposed, with: the co-operation of the medical profession and the. headmasters of the various schools, to see -that- each child showing" signs of malnutrition should receive daily at least tone glass of milk. !It was felt that on no account must children fall into ill health, through being deprived of essential foodstuffs, and of these milk was one of the most" important. The activities of the organisation had grown to such dimensions that the time had arrived when it was considered that the administrative side of the society's work.should be separated from the secretarial and financial side. It was accordingly'suggested that an administrator should be appointed. This.would not involve any extra burden on the Family's finances, as a retired gentleman, with outstanding qualifications, was available to collaborate with the present seeretarytreasurer. Plans were also under, consideration for the employment of a number of boys who, were at present unable to find work. If these plans materialised, a number of boys ■would be placed in employment under competent instructors, and would be taught a trade, under supervision. The report and balance-sheet, which showed an expenditure of £2109 5s 9d in various forms of relief, were adopted. 'The following officers were elected:— President, the Et. Hon. G. W. Forbes; vice-president*; the Mayor (Mr. T.. C. A. Hislop), the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coatee, and Mr. H. Holland, M.P. The retiring directors and the retiring ladies' executive were unanimously re-elected, and a member of the ladies' executive was added to the directorate. . •
